Imagine having access to a computer and internet for the first time. The opportunities to learn and discover are just mind-blowing. The Computer Education Program at the community center aims to provide a free place for locals to learn computer skills and connect to the rest of the world. Training interested individuals in computer programs increases their opportunity to get a job – which are hard to come by in Guanacaste. Physically, our program will provide a secure room with six laptops (to start), basic office furniture, teaching materials, white board, and an A/C unit.
Our local nonprofit partner, Asociacion de Vecinos de Venado, has acknowledged the importance of the computer center and has raised funds to install a secure door and locker ( photo below). We love that they are already taking ownership of the program!
Thanks to our 2014 donations, we were able to initiate our computer program in January 2015. We built shelves and organized the computer room with a printer, a whiteboard, a fan and necessary office supplies. A meeting was held to form a computer team, to discuss the importance of computers, and to discuss how we will involve the community in this program.
