The Venado Community Center is a fun and safe place for community members to gather, learn, and express themselves. The center is made up of two houses renovated in January 2014 with the help of 30 volunteers from Venado. The purpose for each room was decided by our local nonprofit partner, Asociacion de Vecinos de Venado. One house includes an adult meeting room, mini library, and second-hand shop. The other is focused on children with an art/music room, game room, and infant playroom.
During a typical day at the community center, you’ll find our Zumba group dancing away from 4-5pm and the children’s daycare open from 5-6pm. The center is filled with laughs, smiles, singing and dancing. Some larger events are also hosted at the center, including Dia de Ninos, where 150 gathered to celebrate Venado’s children.
Thanks to the success of our 2014 Holiday Crowdfunding Campaign, in January 2015 we completed our first round of renovations to the community center. We worked with the Asociacion de Vecinos de Venado to define priority areas – the kitchen, and the computer room – and purchased materials together. Now we have a fully functional community kitchen including an oven, coffeemaker, microwave, and cutlery. The women enjoy cooking together at the center.
