The Venado Community Center is a fun and safe place for community members to gather, learn, and express themselves. The center is made up of two houses renovated in January 2014 with the help of 30 volunteers from Venado. The purpose for each room was decided by our local nonprofit partner, Asociacion de Vecinos de Venado. One house includes a computer lab, kitchen, office, and second-hand shop. The other is used as our after school daycare center and also houses our surfboard rental and repair shop.
During a typical day at the community center, you’ll find the computer room and the children’s daycare open from 4-6pm. The center is filled with laughs, smiles, singing and dancing. Some larger events are also hosted at the center, including Dia de Ninos, where 150 gathered to celebrate Venado’s children.
Thanks to our 6-month internship program, we have been able to have volunteers in the field to keep the community center open full time. Our fearless local leader, Carmen, was promoted to Community Center Manager. She has been a great community advocate to promote and help develop community initiatives and projects. A Fun Committee was formed to organize community events like movie nights and recreation days for the children.
